How to Succeed in Email Marketing

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

Consumers look at who the sender is and what the subject is before deciding whether or not to open an email message.

In other words, you need to become a trusted sender, so you can email market successfully.

Here are some rules to succeed with Email Marketing:

Give them what they want– Before you start sending emails to your database remember how or why someone opted-in to your email list. Did you promise them something? If you have not yet delivered on your promise you should do that before trying to sell them anything. Provide information along with the promotions you are offering. Send some emails which only contain information. This can assist you in increasing consumer confidence and more importantly, consumer loyalty.

Design your Email Format so it is Simple and Concise — Consumers read their emails EVERYWHERE – on their computers, phones, even televisions. You must keep this in mind when developing your email. You want your emails to be clean and easy to read. HTML emails look great but many people do not read their emails in a format that will retain the formatting. Though you can still use this format you want to make sure the email will be easy to read and follow if they do not receive it in an HTML format. Keep your emails short and remember most people scan a message. Highlight the most important aspects of your email and remember less is more.

Provide an Opt-Out Option– Give your database the option to opt-out. People will appreciate when you do not hold their email address captive. If you do, you will lose their confidence and loyalty.

Now that we have reviewed some rules, let us discuss the next steps you need to climb to move forward with your email marketing efforts:

Devote time each week– Observe a webinar about subscriptions; consumers who have unsubscribed; bounces; statistics – i.e. opens and clicks; and utilizing social media.

Decide your frequency — We suggest sending at least one message monthly or multiple newsletters if you promote more than one service. You also should send promotional messages offering a discount.

Isn’t it time to include a sign-up form on your website — You need to collect new subscribers.

Grab their attention — Design a new template for your email marketing campaigns.

Develop relevant content in your messages — Continue sending your materials, announcements, or promotions with consistent frequency. When your list grows, you will notice increased traffic which should produce increased sales.

Add a line similar to the following to the top of your emails

Don’t Forget to ADD yourcompanyname@here TO YOUR ADDRESS BOOK to guarantee future deliveries to your inbox.

*Did You Know– Spammers can purchase lists legally and illegally. When you sign up for a website or a service make sure you read the privacy policy carefully to find out what the site plans to do with your email address.

You too can have a good email list

It is said that building an email list of contacts for your campaigns is one of the most important pieces in the email marketing puzzle.
Creating an email list of contacts does not have to be a burdensome and confusing process.

Here are some tips I researched to assist you, in creating email lists:

1. Offer an incentive to join your email list.
This can be a product coupon, a free sample, an industry whitepaper, or an invitation to an event.
2. Host a contest for subscribers.
Give your subscribers the opportunity to be entered into a drawing, sweepstakes, or other contests.
3. Reward your customers who refer their friends.
You could launch a new email marketing campaign for the “Refer a Friend” program, or simply highlight the program in your existing messages.
4. Make it easy to sign up.
Your customers likely lead hectic lives, so require them to provide as little information as possible to make the process quick and efficient.
5. Reassure your subscribers that their personal information will be kept private and safe.
Respect that promise by not sharing subscribers’ information with any other parties or businesses.
6. Ensure your signup form is prominent on your website.
If you are placing a signup form on your site, be sure it’s easily accessible on the homepage, as well as on other pages of your site.
7. Make sure your subscribers can easily share your messages.
Allow your subscribers to forward your emails to others. You can also provide the ability for your subscribers to share your email content on social networks such as Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter.

If you want to build a list fast, you are going to need discipline.

You must do your homework. If you are going to have a successful business, you need to have extensive knowledge. The only way you are going to make money online is by offering something of value. Everyday people are looking for solutions to a problem. What you need to do is find out what their problems are and then you can provide a solution. List building is an art that should be practiced. Target your market and provide content that delivers.

Make sure your page is converting. If you want to build a list fast, you need a lead capture page that converts your visitors into subscribers at about 30%. So, if you get 1000 visitors to your page, 300 of them should subscribe to your mailing list. Always test and make changes to your pages for the best conversions. The three things you should focus on are the headline, your bullet points, and your call to action. Your headline is probably the most important part of the page. A good headline should compel your visitors to keep reading the page. Your bullet points should be benefit oriented and not include features. People will not opt-into your list for features, but they will do it for benefits. List what they will receive for subscribing to your mailing list.

Submit articles for traffic. The best quality traffic is generated from articles. This is because articles are helpful and informative. So, your traffic is much more targeted and qualified to be on your list.

Here are some additional items to consider:

  • Get Signed Up With An Auto-responder

This is your personal assistant in the online world – a very important list-building tool. This piece of software will automate all of your emails, allowing you personal time and freedom.

  • Provide VALUE

Your goal is to come up with a series of emails that will give your subscribers VALUE; this is a key to your success. They came to you because they’re ready to learn something they don’t already know. You need to become that go-to maven in your niche. The purpose of your email series is for that subscriber to know, like, and trust you.

Understand your subscribers are willing to buy; they just need to know from whom to buy. Build that relationship and become that person they choose.

A good strategy is to fill your auto-responder up with weeks of emails, and they will be sent on your behalf.

An auto-responder service is your bloodline to your business and should be part of every email marketing campaign.

  • Capture Email Addresses

A Squeeze page has one goal in mind, and that is getting contact information from your website visitor.  If you want to know how to make money with an email list, you need a squeeze page.

An effective Squeeze page with boost your list building efforts and grow your email list.

What You Need to Know About Email Lists

Friday, March 13th, 2009

Now, we all know what an email marketing list is right? If you still do not grasp the entire concept of an email list, here you have it — “An electronic mailing list (sometimes written as elist or e-list) is a special usage of e-mail that allows for widespread distribution of information to many Internet users. It is similar to a traditional mailing list — a list of names and addresses, as might be kept by an organization for sending publications to its members or customers — but typically refers to four things: a list of e-mail addresses, the people (“subscribers”) receiving mail at those addresses, the publications (e-mail messages) sent to those addresses, and a reflector, which is a single e-mail address that, when designated as the recipient of a message, will send a copy of that message to all of the subscribers.”

The aforementioned can be of great importance in your company’s attempt to disseminate information to new and existing clients. But, what happens when your list is either too long or you do not have the time to manage this on your own? Simply stated, you look to a company that can handle this seemingly daunting task for you. But what things should you know before handing over your email list?

First, you should inquire about a confidentiality agreement. What exactly is a confidentiality agreement and how does it protect you? A confidentiality agreement is a legally binding contract between two entities that outlines confidential information and its intended use. By offering you a confidentiality agreement, this company is in fact stating they will not use your email list in any way other than the terms of which you have agreed. In other words, they cannot sell your list to a third party or use it for their own benefit.

Secondly, you should ensure that every single email sent out on your behalf will include an Opt-out option. What does this mean? This means every recipient will easily be able to discontinue receipt of your emails at any time. This step is not only important – it is also mandated by law.

Thirdly, you should ensure this company is antispam compliant. Antispam complaint means the information you are sending out to recipients has been requested. If at any point, someone on the list opts out or worse yet, someone who never requested your information receives it, you are then spamming.

Lastly, you should ensure the company you select can provide response handling and email tracking capability. What does this mean? Ideally, you want every email opened and every email to reach the intended email address. Realistically this does not happen — people change email addresses, forget to add you to their safe email list, or simply lose interest. No matter the reason, you want to know how many emails were opened, bounced, never opened, and returned. Bottom line, your email marketing provider should be able to give you an extensive report about your email marketing campaign.

In closing, I will say selecting an email marketing provider is not something you do on a whim or based on a gut feeling. There are important criteria that should be met by the company you trust with your customers. If a company cannot provide you with what we have discussed today, they are not the company for you.
