Building Strong Business Relationships

When it comes to businesses, relationships with your clients, potential clients, employees, and advisors play a big part in success and longevity, which means the ability to build strong bonds is a requirement. However, it isn’t easy and it’s not something that you can instantly buy with money. If you’re looking to nurture and build strong business relationships, you should keep the following in mind:

Help People

As much as people want to push the “business before pleasure” adage, the truth is that in a professional setting, people tend to prefer those that they feel are willing to help them out even if it’s not part of the deal or beyond their responsibilities. So if you’re ever dealing with customers, employees, or partners, go out of your way to help them out and make their lives easier even though you’re not technically required by the business to do so. Provide advise, constructive feedback, or share things that will help them get the most out of the transaction.

Keep People in Your Network Updated

You should send updates to the people, simply updating them on new things that you have learned and you should also encourage them to do the same. However, you need to ensure that you show sincerity – avoid coming off as self-promotional. Genuinely inspire conversations and don’t spam. It shouldn’t be exclusive to online updates. If possible, ask people out for coffee and talk with them in person.

Be Visible and Transparent

Finally, you don’t want to be an anonymous presence or an absentee businessman. Show people that yes, there’s a person running the business and he cares enough that he personally oversees things and is available when needed. When you automate and relegate so many responsibilities to the point that the business becomes impersonal, building relationships become difficult. Simply put, people prefer to build relationships with other people, not machines, systems, or automated infrastructures.
